Summer research, student scholarship application period open

Posted Nov. 1, 2017

American Veterinary Medical Foundation Veterinary students can now apply for two scholarship programs offered by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation.

Merck Animal Health recently increased the level of funding for its Veterinary Student Scholarship Program from $185,000 to $300,000. This allows the Foundation to provide an additional 22 $5,000 scholarships for veterinary students in the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean focusing on companion animal medicine. Thus, the number of scholarships available for second- and third-year veterinary students will be as follows:

  • Ten scholarships for students with a food animal focus in the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean.
  • Thirty-two scholarships for U.S., Canadian, and Caribbean students with a companion animal focus.
  • Fourteen scholarships for students in Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Applications for the Merck Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarship Program are due by Dec. 31.

In addition, students can apply for the AVMA/AVMF Second Opportunity Summer Research Scholarship. It is intended to provide support for students who participated in the 2017 Veterinary Scholars Program, sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim, and would like a second summer of research experience.

Up to six students will receive $5,000 stipends plus $1,000 to travel to the 2018 National Veterinary Scholars Symposium at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. The deadline is Jan. 12, 2018. Visit the foundation's website for more information.
